I had heard good things about this beautifully written story of a gargantuan woman who is compared to her slim, beautiful sister, neglected and misused in her childhood by a host of uncaring adults, taunted by peers, and who eventually allows herself to be manipulated during her adulthood, but I have to give it very mixed reviews, because the thread of the story and the nature of the characters eventually seemed hollow and confusing. The author spends an annoying amount of time describing every small detail of Truly’s huge, daunting, and unusual physique, and then just when she starts to create some interest in the growth of the character’s relationships, the story travels off into themes of witchcraft, homosexuality, mercy killing, and betrayal, and some of the choices Truly makes just didn’t seem to ring true.
